The Associated Press, "Hopes for Peace"
Since its
establishment as an independent state in 1956, Sudan has
endured civil war for all but 10 years of its existence. A
U.S. backed peace initiative has brought Sudan closer to
peace than anytime during the country's 20-year civil war,
which has killed more than two million people, mostly
because of war-induced famine and disease.
