Workshop (Transitioning to Video) — Rich Addicks
After 27 years with the Atlanta Journal-Constitutionas a staff photographer and AME/Photography, Rich
Addicks, like so many others in the newspaper industry,
took a buyout in 2009. Given the chance to re-invent
himself, and leverage his skills as a visual storyteller
and journalist, Rich ventured into the world of video
as an additional offering to his new freelance photography
business.
Over the past three years, he has seen the video portion
of his business grow each year. Rich will talk about his
transformation and the thinking behind it, how he built
a portfolio of video work, and gained clients. He will also
devote plenty of time for tech talk and equipment, as well
as show and talk about his video work. Most of all, Rich
will champion the idea that those best suited for doing video are photojournalists.

During his career, Rich has covered assignments ranging from famine in Sudan to the
Olympics, and everything in between. He has won several local, regional and national
awards for his work, and in 1998 won first place in general news at the World Press Photo
competition. His work has been submitted several times to the Pulitzer Prize competition
by the Journal-Constitution. Rich is a liberal arts graduate from Oregon State University
and lives in Atlanta.
