Charlie Riedel has been at the 13,000 circulation Hays Daily News since 1983, where he is a photographer and photo editor. He's been NPPA's Region 7 Photographer of the Year twice and has won numerous awards in the Missouri-Kansas AP contest. Charlie will talk about the trials and joys of working at a small paper.
David H. Wells is a photojournalist whose work has appeared in LIFE, Time, Newsweek, National Geographic and The New York Times. He started his career working in newspapers. He was the recipient of the Nikon/NPPA Documentary Sabbatical Grant and was named a "New Face of 1988" by American Photographer Magazine. David's presentation is entitled "What I want to be when I grow up."
Bryan and Mary Jo Moss have a combined 51 years of photojournalism experience at 19 newspapers. Mary Jo currently is a picture editor at the San Jose Mercury News while Bryan holds the position of photography coach at the San Francisco Chronicle. They have numerous awards between them, including two Pulitzer Prizes. Bryan and Mary Jo will talk about the need to maintain the spirit of photojournalism in the face of technological changes currently taking place in the industry. They will also explain how to establish and maintain newsroom systems that allow optimal use of photographers and photography.
Joanna B. Pinneo's first photographic job was as a lab tech at The Commission magazine. She was soon promoted to staff photographer and traveled the world completing photo essays for the magazine. Joanna left The Commission to freelance before accepting a staff position at U.S. News and World Report. She is currently freelancing again and has recently completed her second assignment for National Geographic. In 1986, Joanna was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize and was named third place Magazine Photographer of the Year in the Pictures of the Year competition. Joanna will explain what it takes to get an assignment from National Geographic and what to do with it once you've got it.
Jeffrey Salter was a Navy combat photographer before studying at Syracuse University. He freelanced and worked at smaller papers before landing a job at Newsday. Salter moved to the Miami Herald in 1991. His emotive photographs appeared in the "Songs of My People project." Slater was the winner of last year's Atlanta Seminar on Photojournalism portfolio competition. He will talk on the importance of developing photographic style.
Kirk McKoy is a staff photographer at the Los Angeles Times, where he shoots general assignments for all sections and works part-time on the assignment desk. Before working at Los Angeles he worked at the Orlando Sentinel.
Jerome McClendon is a Senior Picture Editor for the Los Angeles Times. Before coming to the Times he worked at Newsday in Manhattan, the Associated Press in Los Angeles, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and the Marietta (GA) Daily Journal. Jerome and Kirk will speak about what it was like to cover the riots in Los Angeles.
