1986 Faculty and Speakers


Karen Borchers: Runner-up in the World Understanding Award for her project on lesbian mothers. She is a staff photographer with the San Jose Mercury News.

Fred Comgeys: 1985 Photographer of the Year. Mr. Comgeys has worked for the Wilmington (Del.) News-Journal for 25 years as a staff photographer.

John Falk: Currently picture editor of the Philadelphia Daily News, he also gives seminars on portable lighting for the working photographer.

Melissa Farlow: Now a staff photographer with the Pittsburgh Press, Ms. Farlow has returned to the world of daily newspaper photography after a two-year hiatus as an instructor at the University of Missouri.

Tom Gralish: Winner of the 1986 Pulitzer Prize and the 1986 Robert Kennedy Award for his coverage of street people, Mr. Gralish is going to share his work from the Philadelphia Inquirer and talk about the tendency today to set up pictures.

David Hume Kennerly: Pulitzer Prize winner, President Ford's personal photographer, and now a student at UCLA's film school, Mr. Kennedy is pursuing a new direction - dramatic film. He'll show work and talk about the change in his career.

Eli Reed: Mr. Reed, an associate member of Magnum Photo, is the winner of the 1983 World Understanding Award for Central American coverage and runner-up in the 1982 Pulitzer Prize. He was also a Nieman Fellow in 1982. (****Reed was added to a brochure that was a hand-out at the seminar, but was not on the brochure that was mailed).

Magnum: The name means photojournalism in the highest documentary tradition. Magnum will send a world-traveling photojournalist - name to be announced later. (****this was not on the brochure that was handed out at the Seminar, but was on the brochure that was mailed out).

Manny Rubio: A successful freelancer for 25 years, Mr. Rubio has more than 600 magazine covers to his credit. A sports specialist for years, he is doing more commercial and industrial and nature photography.

Bill Strode: Mr. Strode will talk about project work and outlets for its publication, including his latest venture, book publishing.
