SLUG: FO/Guatemala, detention #3 DATE: 05/25/2006 PHOTOGRAPHER: SARAH L. VOISIN LOCATION: Tapachula Chiapas, Mexico #: 181230 CAPTION: For the thousands of Central American immigrants wanting to make a better life in the United States, the real border begins 2000 miles south of the border most Americans are thinking about, at Guatemala’ÄöAÃàoÃÇs frontier with Mexico. The journey through Mexico holds many perils; hiking for weeks, corrupt police officers, armed bandits, and the fear of being caught, raped or slipping under a freight train and loosing a limb or dying. PICTURED: A new detention center for immigrants was recently built in Tapachula, Mexico. The center has immigrants from many countries including, all Central American countries, Ethiopia, and a large population from Cuba. There are cells for men, women, and children. On a daily basis, immigrants from Central America are deported on buses to their home countries. Nine-year-old Maria Neuemia Contreras, cq, of El Salvador sits nervous and scared in the processing room of INMs detention facility. She is traveling North to the United States, to be with her mother. It is common to see children as young as this making the dangerous trek alone.
