Friday Workshops
You
must be registered for the Seminar
to be able to sign up for the workshops.
Workshops
will run from 9am-4:45pm. on Friday, December 2
Workshop Leaders Subject to Change

For
an additional $50 (professionals
and students) your seminar registration
will allow you to pick three
workshops from a selection of four offered
on Friday. In addition, anyone resigtering
for the workshops may attend Mary Ellen
Mark's session as a bonus fourth workshop.
Workshops offer an opportunity to learn
from workshop leaders in a smaller,
informal setting. The workshops are three
separate 90 minute sessions on Friday,
December 2, 2005. Pick three from the
first four choices listed below and you
will also be elegible to attend Mary Ellen
Mark's session.

Freelancing
with Jeff Jacobson
Jeff
Jacobson graduated as a lawyer and picked
up a camera when working as a civil rights
lawyer in America in the 1970s, taking
pictures of southern jails and the rural
south. Jacobson's innovative approach took
him to Magnum membership in 1978; he left
along with Harbutt, Mary Ellen Mark and
Burk Uzzle to form Archive Pictures in
1981. His colour images are
powerfully and dramatically composed and
often illustrate his use of flash to
highlight parts of the picture.

Diversity with
Kenny Irby
Kenny
Irby, Visual Journalism Group Leader &
Director of Diversity @ The Poynter
Institute. An integral figure in visual
journalism education, known for his
insightful knowledge of photographic
storytelling, innovative management ideas,
and steadfast ethical thinking. He is the
founder of Poynter's photojournalism
program. Teaches in seminars and consults
in areas of photojournalism, leadership,
ethics, and diversity. Traveled to Russia,
South Africa, Singapore, Jamaica and
Denmark preaching excellence in
photojournalism. Irby has presented on the
2003 Flying Short Course, served a as
photo manager at two Olympic Games,
chaired the Unity '99 Visual Task Force
and is Poynter's representative to the
Best of Photojournalism
Committee.
Contributed
as a photo editor to three Pulitzer
Prize-winning projects while at Newsday;
juror for the American Society of
Newspaper Editor's Community Service
Photojournalism Awards, the Society for
News Design, Annual Pictures of the Year
Competition, White House News
Photographers' Competition, and ASNE
Community Service Photojournalism Award;
recipient of numerous NPPA awards
including the 1999 Joseph Costa Award for
outstanding initiative, leadership, and
service in photojournalism, and the 2002
Presidents Award.

Sports
Photography with Al Tielemans
Al
Tielemans has worked for Sports
Illustrated since 1989, joining their
staff in 1998. He has visited over 30
countries making sports images, covering
the past 15 Super Bowls, 8 Olympic Games
and 13 MLB postseasons. He lives near
Philadelphia with his wife and two
children.

Location
Lighting with Greg Foster
Greg
Foster is a long time regular contributor
to Sports Illustrated, Fortune, Time, ESPN
Magazine, The New York Times, and many
others. His corporate client list includes
The Coca-Cola Company, Kodak, Royal
Caribbean, The NBA, and HBO. He has won
awards in the Pictures of the Year
Competition, The Communication Arts
Photography Annual, The Atlanta
Photojournalism Seminar Competition, and a
variety of others. His ongoing personal
photography projects include a series of
portraits of blues musicians throughout
the South. Foster will show a selection of
his photographs and talk about the
lighting in each of them, and will conduct
a demonstration using various lighting
sources. The emphasis will be on quick,
simple, adaptable lighting in a wide
variety of situations.

Documentary Photography with Mary Ellen
Mark is open as a free fourth workshop for
anyone registering for the Friday workshop
series.
Mary
Ellen Mark has achieved worldwide
visibility through her numerous books,
exhibitions and editorial magazine work.
She is a contributing photographer to The
New Yorker and has published photo-essays
and portraits in such publications as
LIFE, New York Times Magazine, Rolling
Stone, and Vanity Fair. For almost three
decades, she has traveled extensively to
make pictures that reflect a high degree
of humanism. Today, she is recognized as
one of our most respected and influential
photographers. Her images of our world's
diverse cultures have become landmarks in
the field of documentary photography. Her
portrayals of Mother Teresa, Indian
circuses, and brothels in Bombay were the
product of many years of work in India. A
photo essay on runaway children in Seattle
became the basis of the academy award
nominated film STREETWISE, directed and
photographed by her husband, Martin
Bell.
